Castle of San Juan de los Terreros

The castle of San Juan de los Terreros is a construction built during the second half of the 18th century, within the coastal defense system put in place by Carlos III. Designed by Thomas de Warluzel d'Hostel, it was later modified and completed in 1764 by Antonio Duce.

The castle responds to a prototype created by military engineers, which will be adapted according to the needs and places where it is built, but which will maintain the common elements: Hornabeque-shaped ground plan, sloped walls, exterior trim, semicircular bastions, few openings , ashlars, etc.

For strategic reasons, it is built on the top of a hill so the visibility of the building is very wide, being a free-standing construction in an environment of great scenic beauty, which advises delimiting a protected environment for the monument.

The castle of San Juan de los Terreros was affected by the Decree of April 22, 1949, on the Protection of Spanish Castles ("Official State Gazette" number 125, of May 5), becoming considered an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of monument, by virtue of the second additional provision of the current Spanish Historical Heritage Law.
